The Natural Step Sustainability Courses

The Office of Sustainability has teamed up with The Natural Step Canada and the Suncor Energy Foundation to offer two Sustainability courses this May.

Sustainability Basics

The 1-Day Sustainability Basics course is a level 1 introductory course available to University of Saskatchewan staff and faculty who are interested in expanding their knowledge of sustainability while learning about opportunities to extend sustainability into their workplace. During the workshop, you will work through a hands-on case study using the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development, giving you the knowledge and tools to better understand strategy and take a systemic approach to planning, managing, and implementing sustainability initiatives. After this workshop, you will be better equipped to take a sustainability leadership role in your organization to capture value, enable innovation, and drive strategy.

During the workshop, participants will be empowered to:

  • Gain a stronger understanding of sustainability;
  • Reflect on the relevance of sustainability in their workplace;
  • Understand sustainability as a driver of innovation, instead of as a threat to the status quo;
  • Change the way they think about sustainability to see the systemic issues of our day and learn how to see systemic sustainability opportunities in their work; and
  • Be encouraged to influence sustainability-related change processes in their work.

What will you get?

Participants in Sustainability Basics will get:

  • A customized, one-day workshop (including lunch and refreshments)
  • A comprehensive workbook to use during the workshop and keep for your reference
  • A 1-year license to The Natural Step's award-winning Sustainability 101 eLearning course
  • A certificate of completion from The Natural Step Canada

What do you have to do?

To register for the workshop, please contact sustainability@usask.ca. Before the workshop, attendees will be required to complete the 1-hour Sustainability 101 eLearning course on their own time as an introduction to the core concepts of the sustainability framework. This ensures that all participants will arrive at the workshop with a shared language and understanding of sustainability basics, which will enhance interaction and discussion to make the most of the workshop's time. Throughout the day, participants will interact closely with their peers, discussing and presenting ideas, challenges, and possibilities with the group.
