Integrative Health Seminar Series – The Public Health Impacts of Climate Change

You may be familiar with the environmental impacts of climate change, but how much do you know about its potential impact on your health? On Tuesday, October 10^th, join Margret Asmuss, Sustainability Coordinator for the U of S Office of Sustainability, and the Centre for Integrative Medicine as we investigate the public health impacts of climate change. All are welcome to come to this talk, which will be loaded with information and discussions on what frontline medical practitioners can do to help curb these impacts.

Winter cycling can be a daunting task in Saskatoon; slick or snow-covered roads, frigid temperatures, and careless drivers can be enough to scare off even the most ardent of cyclists. Fear not, Huskies: the Office of Sustainability and Saskatoon’s extremely friendly cycling groups will be in the Place Riel North Concourse for a workshop on how to maintain a fun and frosty bike commute in the winter. They’ll offer information, safety tips, and personalized pointers on how to continue your sustainable commute even after the snow starts to fall.

Join us after class on Wednesday, Oct. 11^th to learn about how sustainable business practices have allowed Sperling Silver Distillery to become one of the most successful distilleries in Saskatchewan. Then, we’ll hear from our favorite campus pub about their decision to only feature local draught beers on tap and what it’s like encouraging and working within a local liquor market. Finally, What’s Your Cap will be on site to explore the realities of sustainable and healthy drinking behaviours to help you figure out how to enjoy your favorite drinks without going overboard.

U of S Native Vegetation Tour and Picnic in the Garden with the Native Plants Society of Saskatchewan

The prairies are home to countless unique and special plant species that help make us the wonderful ecosystem that we are. Join Chet Neufeld of the Native Plants Society of Saskatchewan on a guided walk through the Meewasin River Valley as we learn about the plants that make our province unique. Afterwards, stick around for an informative picnic in the Education Building’s Prairie Habitat Garden as we learn about campus garden and vegetation initiatives with Profs. Janet McVittie and Grant Wood. Plants have never been this exciting!

Networking is about developing meaningful relationships. CareerMeetUps exists to connect multiple communities in a series of collaborative networking events. The Student Employment and Career Centre (SECC) wants to build an ecosystem of key stakeholders that will lead to career development/opportunities and success for USask students. This is an opportunity to connect with others in your industry to help students with their quest for a creer.

Through this event, all participants will:

• Have an opportunity to discuss the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as they relate to industry and your careers.
• Have an opportunity to learn about and practice the key career readiness competencies.
• Understand the importance of defining goals/intentions before engaging in networking activities.
• Develop an authentic introduction and practice strategies to make a good first impression.
• Receive guidance on professional etiquette including handshaking.
• Identify strategies to network effetively in an informal or formal dining setting.

Are you interested in climate action, reducing inequalities, peace and justice, eradicating poverty, clean energy, responsible consumption, sustainable economic growth, or working for the United Nations? Do you want to get involved in locally or internationally implementing these sustainable changes to help make the world a better place? The USSU Sustainability Committee and the USASK Model UN with the Office of Sustainability are excited to bring you a unique opportunity to explore the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals! In cooperation with the Foundation for Environmental Stewardship, the U of S will be hosting a UN SDGs Youth Training Seminar led by UN officials and student leaders from around the country. This event is open to all, and seeks to encourage Canadian youth to learn more about how to contribute to international development.

Sustainable Fresh Food Market

Join us as we support the USSU Food Centre in a celebration of sustainable and local food on campus. As a branch of the Saskatoon Food Bank, the USSU Food Centre is an important response to hunger on campus by providing emergency food hampers to students in financial need and selling nutritious fruit and vegetables at an affordable price to all students. With the help of CHEP Good Food Inc., we’ll be bringing sustainable and local food hampers to highlight what is available in Saskatoon to the health- and socially-conscious student.

SENSSA will be hosting a clothing swap as part of Sustainability Week on Tuesday, Oct.13, from 10am to 4pm, in the 3rd floor lounge in Kirk Hall. Clothing swaps are a great way to recycle good condition used clothing! If you have any clothing that you'd like to pass on to others, please bring it by the lounge anytime on Tuesday, Oct.13. (The earlier the better.) We can accept clothing, outer-wear (coats, hats, gloves, scarves, etc.) and accessories. Everyone is welcome to stop by and browse, even if you don't have clothing to swap. We know that we have lots of new arrivals to Saskatoon in SENS, please use this opportunity to enhance your wardrobe!

The Office of Sustainability joins the College of Law, the ICCC, PAVED Arts, and the Broadway Theatre to present a night of sustainability-themed films. Starting at 7:00 PM, ICCC and PAVED Arts team up to present Fractured Land, the journey of a young indigenous leader fighting the natural gas operations damaging his community. Caleb Behn, the young Dene lawyer at the heart of the film, will join us after the film for a panel discussion about the film. Following Caleb’s panel, the Broadway Theatre will continue with its screening of This Changes Everything, Avi Lewis’ adaptation of Naomi Klein’s recent book focusing on the front lines against climate change. The film will be attended by the Saskatoon chapter of Next Up, who will also be hosting a social event at Amigo’s Cantina beforehand which interested people are invited to join. It’s sure to be a thought provoking night of fantastic films!

The 1^st Annual Rob Dumont Energy Management Awards are approaching and it’s time to begin honoring sustainable energy innovations in Saskatoon. The Office of Sustainability is happy to be offering a limited number of tickets to both staff and students of the U of S to attend the cocktails, banquet, and award ceremony as an opportunity to network with others in the local sustainable energy community and to celebrate local sustainability successes.
